Hounslow awards SITA UK new waste and recycling contract
The London Borough of Hounslow has awarded its new waste and recycling collection service to SITA UK.
As a result, residents in the West London borough will benefit from one of the most comprehensive recycling services in the capital, with the capacity to recycle 70 per cent of household waste.
The new contract underlines the borough's ambition to become one of the UK's lead authorities in the field of environmental sustainability
Cllr Barbara Reid, the council's lead member for environment, said: "We are committed to making our borough a cleaner and greener place to live. That's why we are taking steps to increase the borough's recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill."
"We are keen to do all we can to help local people in the borough to do their bit. We hope that making recycling easier and more convenient will enable more people to help Hounslow become a greener borough."
David Foster, Head of Operations at SITA UK said: "We're delighted to have been awarded the contract with the London Borough of Hounslow and are looking forward to working with the council and the residents to help improve recycling rates across the borough."
SITA UK's existing interests in the capital include a long-standing relationship with the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and a partnership with the North London Waste Authority to manage the authority's waste through Londonwaste.
Hounslow's new and improved recycling service will start in February 2009 and will include collections for household plastics and food waste.
