Asbestos disposal

Since the ban on co-disposal on 16 July 2004, landfill operators are no longer allowed to dispose of hazardous waste into non-hazardous landfill sites.

In order to facilitate the disposal of asbestos wastes, SITA UK has provided an asbestos ‘monocell’ at our landfill facilities at Packington (situated between Birmingham and Coventry), Granville (near Telford) and Clifton Marsh (in Lancashire).

At these sites we are permitted by current legislation to accept bonded and fibrous asbestos as well as wastes contaminated with asbestos fibres.

In order to dispose of any waste, you must have a valid waste carriers licence and a waste transfer note completed with the relevant information.

If you produce hazardous waste you may need to register with the Environment Agency (further details are available on the Agency’s website at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/newrulesonwaste).

To dispose of hazardous wastes (including asbestos) you will also be required to complete a ‘Hazardous Waste consignment note’, which replaced the Section 62 notes upon the introduction of the Hazardous Waste Regulations in July 2005. A fully completed SITA UK consignment note can replace the need for a Waste Transfer Note for an asbestos load.
