Granville energy-from-waste facility

Background

Telford, like other communities across the UK, needs to find an alternative way of dealing with its household waste. Despite increased recycling participation rates, the amount of waste that UK residents generate is actually rising. At the same time, there are EU targets to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and heavy financial penalties for councils that fail to meet them.

Recycling as much as possible and reducing waste will play an important role, but there will always be some materials left over that cannot be recycled. We need a sustainable way of treating this left over (residual) waste – and ideally we should derive a benefit from it too. Along with technology specialists Cyclerval UK, we are proposing an energy-from-waste (EfW) centre to provide just such a solution for Telford.

Planning application

Our proposal is to develop the energy-from-waste facility at our existing recycling and waste management site at Granville in Shropshire. The EfW facility would be capable of processing 62,000 tonnes of residual waste per year.

The capacity of the plant has been calculated to manage the anticipated rise in population and consequent waste as Telford grows over the next 25 years.

The majority of the development will be housed in a new steel-framed building which will be no more than 32 metres high. The stack – or chimney – will be 65 metres high.

The benefits

The proposed EfW centre is part of a planned integrated waste management strategy that would be used to handle Telford’s residual waste, while the heat and steam generated by the facility could be captured and used as a renewable energy source for local businesses. This is known as a combined heat and power (CHP) plant.

Public exhibition

As part of our commitment to public engagement, we held a public exhibition in April 2008, where we invited the local community to consider the proposals and give us feedback.
