Over the years, collection services have been transformed, and today’s is perhaps one of the most significant and best value public services provided.
These services are provided under contracts that SITA UK is awarded from our UK local authorities, and are secured through competitive tender. This process exists to ensure that public monies are being used to secure the most appropriate service that is required, at competitive price levels.
Our contracts usually have a duration of 5 to 7 years. Throughout this period SITA UK strives to maintain a high standard of service delivery to maximise our opportunity to retain the contract for a second or further contract period.
SITA UK’s success in building our portfolio of contracts means that a significant number of our employees were formerly working providing the service for the local authority or the previous incumbent contractor. SITA UK has a proud record of integrating workforces with such diverse background into the common culture of SITA UK.
Most of our services are for weekly collection of waste, though some are more, and some less frequent. As a greater proportion of our waste is recycled, the need for a weekly frequency of collection diminishes. A move to fortnightly collection of refuse, often called residual waste collection, in combination with a fortnightly collection of recyclables can produce high recycling quantities and divert significant quantities of waste away from disposal via landfill. These objectives are targets for all UK local authorities, and SITA UK is pioneering the introduction of such services in a number of our contracts.
