Aberdeen is Scotland’s third largest city, with over 200,000 residents.
In 2000, SITA UK was awarded a 25 year contract to manage recycling, composting, treatment and disposal of the city’s household waste.
Materials recycling facilities
In July 2004, a materials recycling facility (MRF) was built at Sclattie Transfer Station, primarily to handle the Council’s segregated kerbside collected recyclables. The facility handles approximately 14,000 tonnes each year and handles a broad range of materials including:
- newspapers
- magazines
- cardboard
- aluminium cans
- steel cans
- plastic bottles
- glass (segregated into clear, brown and green)
Community recycling centres
Major improvements have been made to four community recycling centres in the city. This has improved the customer experience and increased the range of materials that can be recycled.
New developments
SITA UK is currently working with Aberdeen City Council to devise new initiatives to achieve Aberdeen City Council’s recycling target of 40 per cent and divert more waste from landfill.
