South Gloucestershire

South Gloucestershire is a Unitary Authority comprising 105,000 households on the northern and eastern fringes of Bristol and the rural areas and market towns north of the city.

SITA UK and South Gloucestershire County Council entered into a 25 year PFI contract which has already seen recycling rates rise from 6 per cent in 2000 to over 40 per cent in 2007.

Waste management in South Gloucestershire is being delivered under the SORT IT!* brand, which is a fully integrated municipal waste management service.

The SORT IT!* services
SORT IT!* collects, treats and disposes of all household waste in the South Gloucestershire area (over 150,000 tonnes per annum). This includes:

  • alternate weekly collections of compostables and residual waste (left over after recycling)
  • fortnightly kerbside collections of dry recylables (including paper, glass and cans)
  • civic amenity sites rebranded as recycling centres, achieving recycling rates in excess of 50 per cent
  • an expanded network of sites where people can bring paper, glass, cans, plastic bottles and textiles to be recycled
  • a successful awareness and education campaign to encourage people to reduce and recycle their waste

New developments

  • SITA UK is introducing new services to increase the range of materials that can be recycled and redeveloping recycling centres.
  • Collections of food waste will begin in 2008 and are projected to raise the county’s recycling rate to 44 per cent.
  • SITA UK is building a 30,000 tonne capacity in-vessel compostor to treat the mixed green waste, cardboard and food waste collected from 97,000 households in the area. The high quality compost made at the facility will meet the highest production standards and will be sold through the APEX brand - a partnership between SITA UK and other waste management companies.
