In September 1999, Surrey Waste Management (SWM), a wholly-owned subsidiary of SITA UK, was awarded a Private Finance Initiative contract by Surrey County Council to manage the recycling and disposal of Surrey’s household waste for 25 years.
SWM is working with the county council and the 11 district and borough authorities in Surrey to recycle 25 per cent of the waste it receives.
Facts and figures
- Each property within Surrey throws away about 1.2 tonnes of rubbish, generating over 550,000 tonnes of waste a year.
- In 1999 approximately 90 per cent of Surrey's household waste went direct to landfill sites. This has steadily decreased to below 70 per cent in 2007.
- Surrey’s recycling rate has increased from 11 per cent (pre-contract) to over 30 per cent in 2007.
Community recycling centres
SWM manages 15 community recycling centres (CRCs) and four waste transfer stations within the county. Each of the CRCs is available for the free disposal of household waste by Surrey residents and offers extensive recycling facilities.
Surrey’s CRCs are currently undergoing an extensive redevelopment programme to increase recycling rates and improve the customer experience.
Energy-from-waste facilities
In 2007, Surrey Waste Management will submit a planning application to develop an energy-from-waste facility at Capel in Surrey. This facility will recover energy from 110,000 tonnes of Surrey’s household residual waste.
Community involvement
SWM has a dedicated waste minimisation team who work with local schools, community groups and residents to promote sustainable waste management, educating members of the public about waste reduction, re-use and recycling of domestic waste.
Examples of waste minimisation and recycling initiatives carried out by the team include home composting, roadshows at community events and site tours of local recycling facilities, reducing junk mail, environmental challenge badge, school assemblies and county-wide competitions.
