Private Finance Initiative

Forthcoming legislation and targets to increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill mean that an estimated £11b of investment is needed to develop new infrastructure across the country.

This is where the private sector comes in, bringing in capital funding up front, so that local authorities can develop the infrastructure they need. With this in place, local authorities can avoid the penalties that are being imposed for missing targets for recycling and failing to divert waste from landfill.

We have extensive practical experience of the commercial issues underlying PFI transactions and have a proven track record of delivering multi-faceted projects.

Whether it’s delivering services, developing facilities or integrating these with segregated waste collections, we have the expertise. We can advise local authorities on procurement strategies and will provide both capital assets, as well as the services to operate them effectively.

As part of a multinational, we have the capacity and additional backing to manage exceptionally complex projects.

We will only use technology that is proven to achieve the results required. We also build excellent relationships with our clients, operating a transparent working policy. Working with SITA UK provides certainty and clarity. We work extensively at the front-end of a PFI project to work out accurate costs and waste flows, to ensure that we deliver what we promise.

Our PFI division is one of the most successful in the waste management industry. In 2007, the ‘SITA Consortium’ was voted Best Private Sector Consortium at the Public Private Finance Awards 2007. The consortium, made up of SITA UK, Royal Bank of Scotland and AXA, secured two waste private finance initiative (PFI) projects in 2006; Cornwall and Northumberland. The award commended the consortium for the successful delivery, quality and sustainability of the waste PFI projects it brought to a close in 2006, reflecting the innovative and committed approach to partnering.
