Composting has a pivotal role to play as a treatment option in enabling local authorities to achieve their recycling targets and in diverting Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW) from landfill to meet Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme (LATS) targets.
SITA UK has developed a network of composting plants to process green garden waste and kitchen waste. We are now one of the largest producers of refuse derived compost in the UK.
Composting offers net environmental and social benefits, especially when the compost is of a quality that allows for the displacement of peat. SITA UK is committed to the development of long-term markets for compost and as part of this strategy has been instrumental in the creation of the APEX partnership. Through this brand SITA UK has helped supply over 250,000 cubic metres of high quality compost to the retail and landscaping market.
For some time now SITA UK has been at the forefront of developments in the production and marketing of refuse derived compost.
As part of our on-going strategy to divert biodegradable waste from landfill, SITA UK is now developing a range of new generation composting plants designed to meet all current regulatory standards (including the Animal By-Products Regulations) and maximise the diversion of Biodegradable Municipal Waste away from landfill.
We also have contracts with several local authorities enabling us to bag and brand the compost produced from their green waste. In addition, we have developed our own brand of compost called Organo which is supplied to local authorities and for other bulk sales.
Through collection we are working hard to further encourage the segregation and separate collection of household organic waste. We have vast experience of these systems in Europe and are keen to share our knowledge and experience in this area to help our clients meet their recycling and composting aspirations.
