Energy from Waste (EfW) is a technology which has numerous environmental benefits, including the reduction of waste volumes and facilitating the recycling of metals and other residual materials from the delivered waste stream.
The process also recovers energy from waste in a controlled and regulated environment with the generated electricity then being supplied to the national grid to support the growing level of 'green' electricity produced in the UK.
Throughout Europe SITA operates a large number and range of EfW facilities and has significant experience in their development and operation. In the UK we utilise high performance moving grate technology and currently operate plants at Kirklees, Teesside, and North London with a fourth plant recently opened in the Isle of Man.
The Kirklees plant being the first to operate to the new IPPC and Waste Incineration Directive standards in the UK and the Isle of Man facility won the 2004 Award for Excellence in the waste management industry for its innovative design.
Our long term aim is to make adequate EfW capacity available to support the growing integrated waste management infrastructure in the UK, to help the country meet its recycling and landfill diversion targets.
