At SITA UK we view waste as a resource and are committed to material recovery and recycling. We are already working in partnership with a number of local authorities to develop infrastructure to facilitate the efficient pre-treatment of waste and ensure that the full value of recyclables are recovered from the waste stream.
Since 2001, a number of new pieces of legislation have been implemented encouraging the pre-treatment and recycling of waste, including:
- The Landfill Directive, which imposes a requirement to treat waste prior to landfilling and introduces targets to divert the biodegradable element of the waste stream away from landfill.
- Each Local Authority now has statutory household waste recycling targets and these are audited through Best Value Performance Indicators.
- The Household Waste Recycling Act 2003 imposes an obligation for authorities to provide for separate collection of at least two recyclable materials from households by 2010.
- The Waste and Emissions Trading Act 2003 introduces the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme in support of the diversion of waste from landfill targets introduced by the Landfill Directive.
SITA UK has established a network of sorting, baling and recycling facilities and is committed to raising awareness of efficient resource management and market development. We have the capability to offer a variety of pre-treatment options to meet individual needs and are working to develop new infrastructure in partnership with all our clients.
