As one of the first companies in the UK to embrace and champion the circular economy, we believe strongly in extracting the maximum value from the waste we handle. Of all the waste handled by SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, over 80% is recycled or recovered.
We are able to offer a full range of services to local authorities looking to develop recycling facilities. We can design, build and finance the development of the facilities and, once up and running, we can operate them on behalf of our local authority partners.
At our existing sites, we have used a range of proactive measures to help improve recycling rates – including increasing staffing, adopting a ‘meet and greet’ policy to assist and advise residents, accepting a wider range of recyclable materials, changing the design and layout of sites to make recycling easy and safer, and providing recycling awareness courses to all our recycling operatives. We also have re-use shops at a number of our household waste recycling centres, to ensure that items that can be reused and have a second life.
We can also provide integrated resource and recycling management facilities that combine recycling centres with other facilities.
After reducing and recycling waste, we recognise the critical role that energy-from-waste has in the waste hierarchy and helping to reduce the UK’s consumption of fossil-derived fuel. SUEZ operates more energy-from-waste capacity in the UK than any other organisation, with a total of seven facilities.
As part of our efforts to ensure that waste is put to good use, we produce a large range of high-quality products from the waste materials that we collect and process.
Our wood facilities produce a range of different sized fractions which can be tailored to the needs of our customers, from animal bedding and chipboard to fuel that can be used in biomass facilities.
SUEZ also produces a wide range of BSI PAS 100-standard compost from its network of composting facilities across the country. Our products, which include bio-fuels, mulch products and high-quality horticultural grade compost, are supplied to a large variety of markets and offer excellent choice and quality to our customers.
SUEZ is also the largest producer of refuse derived fuel in the country. Refuse derived fuel is made from domestic waste which includes biodegradable material as well as plastics. Refuse derived fuel is used in combined heat and power facilities, many of them in Europe where they generate electricity and hot water for communal heating systems in the local area. We are experienced in the production, transport and testing of these products.
