NORM treatment plans approved
Planning permission has been granted for the development of a facility to treat Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) at Stoneyhill near Longhaven.
Development of the new treatment facility will allow NORM producers in the North Sea oil and gas industry to comply with international legislation which will prevent the discharge of this material off-shore.
The new facility will be developed by SITA UK and radioactive waste experts, Nuvia.
Said SITA UK Development Manager, Phil Holland, “We are delighted that approval has been granted for this new facility, which will treat NORM affected equipment such as pipes and valves, allowing cleaned equipment to be reused or recycled. It will create new jobs and provide companies in the North Sea oil and gas industry with the means to dispose of this material safely and responsibly.”
