Public exhibition for new Aberdeen recycling centre
SITA UK, the company behind plans to develop a new recycling centre in the west of the City, are set to outline how the new facility will help local residents make a significant contribution to more sustainable waste and resource management in Aberdeen.
The company will be holding a public exhibition on 25 and 26 May 2011 to outline its plans, and has this week distributed 1,000 leaflets to local homes to invite people along.
Annemarie Wilshaw, Planning Manager at SITA UK, said, “Household waste recycling centres are an important part of any city’s strategy to reduce waste and increase recycling.
“They offer an essential local service and provide people with the opportunity to recycle a huge range of material close to where they live. This might include bulky items, wood, electronic equipment, garden waste, old clothes, batteries, paint and oil, as well as glass, paper, cardboard and metals.
“Modern, well-designed recycling centres such as the one proposed can recycle over 70 per cent of the materials they handle.”
SITA UK has worked with Aberdeen City Council since September 2000 and already operates four household waste recycling centres in the City on their behalf – helping to divert thousands of tonnes of rubbish every year from landfill sites.
The proposed new centre at Grove Nursery would be the fifth such facility in Aberdeen and the first in the west of the city and would have the capability to manage up to 8,000 tonnes of material every year.
Peter Lawrence, Strategist for Waste Management at Aberdeen City Council, said: “There is a long-standing need to provide suitable facilities for residents in the west of the city and to ease traffic at existing sites. The Grove Nursery location is well placed to meet the needs of west Aberdeen and was identified as the preferred location for a new Household Waste Recycling Centre by the Council’s Housing and Environment Committee in April 2010.”
The public exhibition will be held over two days between 6pm and 10pm on Wednesday 25 May 2011 and between 10am and 2pm on Thursday 26 May 2011 at the Hazlehead Community Centre, Provost Graham Avenue, Aberdeen. A planning application will then be submitted in June to Aberdeen City Council, which will then consult on the plans.
