Public to be consulted on new household waste and recycling centre for west Aberdeen

SITA UK is to brief local people about its plans for a new household waste recycling centre at a public exhibition in May.

The proposed new centre at Grove Nursery on Hazlehead Avenue would have the capability to manage up to 8,000 tonnes of material every year. This would help residents in Aberdeen City recycle more materials close to where they live and make a significant contribution towards reducing the environmental and financial cost of waste disposal.

Year-on-year rises in the rate of landfill tax, along with legislative recycling targets imposed upon local authorities by Government, mean that recycling and landfill diversion are an important priority for Aberdeen City Council.

The new household waste and recycling centre would be the fifth such facility in Aberdeen and the first in the west of the city.

Peter Lawrence, Strategist for Waste Management at Aberdeen City Council, said: “There is a long-standing need to provide suitable facilities for residents in the west of the city and to ease traffic at existing sites. The Grove Nursery location is well placed to meet the needs of west Aberdeen and was identified as the preferred location for a new household waste and recycling centre by the Council’s Housing and Environment Committee in April 2010.”

The proposed new facility would be purpose-built and provide the means for local people to recycle an extensive range of material including bulky items, wood, electronic equipment, garden waste, batteries, paint and oil, as well as glass, paper, cardboard and metals. Materials are not reprocessed at a recycling centre. Householders take their materials to the site where they are then bulked up and transferred to other facilities for reprocessing.

Annemarie Wilshaw, Planning Manager at SITA UK, said: “SITA UK operates 120 similar facilities throughout the country on behalf of UK local authorities. Once established such sites are a welcome addition to local communities, provide a vital local service and make a significant contribution to recycling and landfill diversion.”

The public exhibition will be held over two days between 6pm and 10pm on Wednesday 25 May 2011 and between 10am and 2pm on Thursday 26 May 2011 at the Hazlehead Community Centre, Provost Graham Avenue, Aberdeen. A planning application will then be submitted in June to Aberdeen City Council, which will then consult on the plans.
