SITA UK renews £200M contract with Aberdeenshire Council to recover additional value from their waste over 20 years

Aberdeenshire Council has renewed SITA UK  to manage the treatment and disposal of its waste for 15 years plus a 5-year possible extension from 01 July 2010.

Homes in Aberdeenshire produce around 150,000 tonnes of waste every year, of which 50,000 tonnes is sent for recycling whilst the remaining 100,000 tonnes is presently sent to landfill. Around 70,000 tonnes of this is currently disposed of at SITA UK’s Stoneyhill landfill at Longhaven. The new contract will see the remaining 30,000 tonnes per annum being delivered to Stoneyhill.

Under the terms of the contract, SITA UK will develop new facilities in order to recover additional value from the waste with treatment aiming at reducing landfilling as much as possible in line with the ‘zero waste’ objective of the Scottish Government.

Given the rapid changes in recent years, particularly under the effect of measures such as taxes on volumes landfilled and penalties for exceeding authorized quotas, SITA UK, by providing these new facilities to Aberdeenshire, is contributing to the reduction of the proportion of waste landfilled.

Cllr Peter Argyle, chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee, said: “Significant work has already been done in recent years to make it easier for people to reduce, reuse and recycle, and this new arrangement will help us to ensure we meet our obligations regarding the safe and responsible management of waste. The contract with SITA UK marks a significant step forward in how we deal with waste in Aberdeenshire and we look forward to this project moving forward.”

David Palmer-Jones, Chief Executive Officer of SITA UK, said: “We’re delighted to have been given this opportunity and look forward to keep on working together in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council to provide its residents with the modern and robust resource recovery facilities they need."
