SITA UK helps to support treemendous effort in planting world record

Over 10 tonnes of compost from SITA UK was used to support Preston City Council’s part in the world record attempt to plant the most trees in one hour.

Ashton Park was the setting for the attempt, which was organised by the BBC, and similar events were taking place at the same time all around the country in the hope of planting 250,000 trees between 11am and 12noon on Saturday 5th December.

80 volunteers came along to lend their support, and labour and 750 trees were planted within the hour.

Gary Mayson, SITA UK Processing General Manager in the north west, said:

“We were very pleased to support the tree planting event and to be able to contribute to such a worthwhile cause. Every little helps and by each person planting a tree, therefore enhancing the environment and providing habitats for wildlife, we can each make a real difference to our own community.”

Steve Smith, senior ranger for Preston City Council who organised the challenge, along with Groundwork and Lancashire County Council, said:

“We originally planned for 300 trees but by the time everyone turned up, we managed a massive 750. A big thanks to SITA UK for the compost, which will certainly give the trees a good start in life, and well done to those who helped in the attempt.“

Councillor Anthony Gornall said; “We were delighted to be involved in this world record attempt which has an extremely serious message about tackling climate change.  It is wonderful that communities in Preston and around the country are helping to ensure the sustainability of the planet for future generations.”

Numbers are still being counted and it is hoped that the record attempt will be verified later this week.
