Trial to expand recycling across Calderdale

A six month trial to provide door-to-door recycling of bulky waste items like furniture and electrical items started this week.

The new trial service, provided by community recycling company Orchard, will provide homes in the west of the district with the recycling service. If successful it will be expanded across the whole of Calderdale.

Items collected through the scheme will sorted by Orchard into those that can be used again and distributed to a number of outlets for reuse. Items that are not suitable for re-use will, where possible, be recycled.

SITA UK Logistics Director, David Foster, said: "It has always been our intention to work with the community sector and so it is pleasing to have reached an agreement with Orchard to provide this new service in Calderdale.

"For local residents it means that they can recycle even more from the kerbside than ever before."

David Greenhouse from Orchard said: "We are excited to be able to offer this service to the residents of Calderdale. Having access to these goods will enable us to support established charities in their work to help those in need throughout the community. This work will also help reduce the quantity going to landfill by a significant amount."

The new service is part of SITA UK contract to improve recycling for Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council. Starting on the 20 April, the wheelie bin collection service will start across the borough. Working in partnership with the council, SITA UK aims to help the authority achieve its 40 per cent target by 2010.
