Quality & Environmental Management System
Dispelling the myth
In 2002 SITA UK made the commitment to develop and implement a Quality and Environmental Management System (QEMS) accredited to ISO14001 and ISO9001 at all its facilities by the end of 2005. This key target was achieved and today over 350 facilities are accredited to the QEMS. The QEMS provides a framework for managing environmental responsibilities and improving customer satisfaction. However, companies can approach the process of becoming accredited in a variety of different ways and, as such, the actual impact that the resulting systems have on performance and compliance varies greatly.
SITA UK’s QEMS is not just another set of procedures, which sit on a shelf or in a drawer. The procedures are drafted to reflect our everyday business operations and so do not unnecessarily burden those who apply them. Indeed through its application the QEMS will improve efficiency whilst ensuring our everyday actions are assessed in relation to their impacts on the environment and compliance with all relevant legislation and customer requirements.
At the heart of the process is training designed to ensure that all SITA UK staff are aware of relevant legislation and how they can develop their systems of work to minimise the impact upon the environment , improve customer care and ensure continual improvement.
Financial success through greater efficiency and marketing advantage, improved corporate image and compliance record are all headline benefits of QEMS. However, it is the systematic appraisal and improvement of our everyday activities which underpins these benefits and it is here that a truly beneficial QEMS will be realised.
