Case study
Kibblesworth Landfill Gas Generation Project
Landfill gas is extracted from the landfill site using a centrifugal blower. This is then passed through a fine filter (3 to 5 microns) and a number of pressure regulators, which reduce the pressure to 1-5mbar, before being mixed with air, turbocharged and directly injected into a spark ignition engine where it is burnt at 500-600°C. The controlled explosion of the gas within the cylinders forces pistons down and this movement is converted to a rotary motion that rotates the generator. The electricity produced is then transformed to a high voltage and exported to the local electricity distribution network.
