Aberdeen
Aberdeen is Scotland’s third largest city, with over 210,000 residents.
In 2000, SITA UK was awarded a 25-year contract to manage recycling, composting, treatment and disposal of the City’s household waste - around 110,000 tonnes per year.
Materials recycling facilities
In July 2004, a materials recycling facility (MRF) was built at the Sclattie site, primarily to handle the Council’s segregated kerbside collected recyclables. The facility handles approximately 14,000 tonnes of a broad range of materials each year.
In addition to the materials recycling facility, the Sclattie site also handles around 10,000 tonnes of garden waste from dedicated kerbside collections and recycling centres. This facility was expanded in 2009 to accommodate a new kitchen and garden waste kerbside collection, which will provide a further 5,000 tonnes for composting.
Household waste recycling centres
Major improvements have been made to four community recycling centres in the city, increasing the range of materials recycled and improving the customer experience.
New developments
SITA UK is currently working with Aberdeen City Council to devise new initiatives to meet the requirements raised by the Scottish Zero Waste Plan, which include recycling targets of 40 per cent by 2010 and 70 per cent by 2025. These initiatives will include developing a number of new facilities within the City, such as new household waste recycling centres, waste transfer stations and materials recycling facilities.
