SITA UK's 25-year contract with South Gloucestershire Council

South Gloucestershire is a Unitary Authority comprising 107,000 households on the northern and eastern fringes of Bristol and the rural areas and market towns north of the city.

SITA UK and South Gloucestershire Council entered into a 25-year PFI contract which has already seen recycling rates rise from six per cent in 2000 to over 40 per cent in 2008. South Gloucestershire now has a target to recycle over 50 per cent of waste and SITA South Gloucestershire is currently working closely with the authority to develop plans to achieve this rate.

Waste management in South Gloucestershire is being delivered under the SORT IT!* brand, which is a fully integrated municipal waste management service. SORT IT!* collects, treats and disposes of all household waste in the South Gloucestershire area - over 145,000 tonnes per annum.

SITA South Gloucestershire is introducing new services to increase the range of materials that can be recycled and redeveloping recycling centres.

A recent food waste collections trial covers 17,000 households and is being used to evaluate the best methods to provide weekly food collections to all households. SITA South Gloucestershire is proposing a 30,000 tonne capacity in-vessel composter to treat the mixed green waste, cardboard and food waste collected from 97,000 households in the area. The high quality compost made at the facility will meet the highest production standards.

SITA South Gloucestershire’s Waste Minimisation Team has been extended and undertakes a high profile recycling promotions and waste minimisation campaign in the area.
