Surrey
In September 1999, Surrey Waste Management Limited (SWM), a wholly-owned subsidiary of SITA UK, was awarded a Private Finance Initiative contract by Surrey County Council to manage the recycling and disposal of Surrey’s household waste for 25 years.
SWM works closely with the county council and the 11 districts and borough collection authorities in Surrey to reduce the volume of household waste produced, achieve significant recycling and composting rates and divert as much waste as possible away from landfill.
SWM manages a range of facilities on behalf of the county council including 15 community recycling centres, four waste transfer stations and one material recovery facility (MRF) within the county.
Each of the community recycling centres (CRCs) is available for the free disposal of a variety of household waste by Surrey residents. SWM is working to achieve 70 per cent recycling rates at all of its 15 Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) by 2025, following a target set by Surrey County Council in 2009.
SWM has a dedicated waste minimisation team who work with local schools, community groups and residents to promote sustainable waste management, educating members of the public about waste reduction, re-use and recycling of domestic waste.
SWM is also working with Surrey County Council to develop new facilities to manage residual waste.
