Resources produced by SITA UK

SITA UK produces a number of resources as a result of our recycling and waste management processes.

Metals

SITA UK has facilities across the UK that handle, recycle, process and trade ferrous and non-ferrous metals. We also have dedicated in-house trading and shipping teams to ensure that we are able to deliver these products direct to the end user.

We currently supply non-ferrous metal to a range of businesses including steelworks, smelters, foundries and refineries via our dock and export facilities in the UK.

We also have an extensive network for sourcing new materials to ensure that we can supply our customers with the grades of metal they require.

Compost

Composting produces a valuable resource, while at the same time helping to reduce reliance on the UK’s shrinking peat bogs.

SITA UK has a proven track record in processing high quality compost from our range of facilities, which include traditional open windrow composting and advanced in-vessel composters.

All of our green waste sites are registered to the Government-backed Compost Quality Protocol that sets standards to safeguard the environment, public health and product quality and our sites have achieved the British Standard for compost materials, BSI PAS 100.

We supply compost to a wide range of markets and have a wide range of compost products including bio-fuels, mulch products and high-quality horticultural grade compost. Over 60 per cent of the compost we produced in 2008 was used in the landscaping and horticultural markets, and the remainder for bio-fuel, mulch, high-grade horticultural media and agricultural soil improver.

Fuel

SITA UK is utilising the gas that is produced when waste breaks down in our landfill sites and turning it into a ‘green’ fuel. In partnership with Gasrec, the UK’s first commercial producer of liquid biomethane fuel (LBM), the gas which is collected at our Albury plant in Surrey is being converted into LBM.

The plant is expected to produce more than five million litres of fuel per year which is sufficient to fuel up to 150 HGVs or up to 400 LGVs. Used as an alternative to diesel, this will save 15,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
