Information on SITA UK proposals for the Binn Farm gasification facility

Amendment to landfill closure date

SITA UK has been given permission by Perth and Kinross Council to amend the closure date of Binn Farm landfill site, near Glenfarg in Perthshire, for an additional four years, from June 2014 to June 2018.

Increases to the rate of recycling and recovery of waste have resulted in falling levels of materials requiring landfill. The new permission means the total amount of waste deposited at the site will stay unchanged, but the site can continue to accept waste over a longer period of time, ensuring that the void is filled and the land restored to the agreed contours.

The planning application was decided following several months of public consultation, which included three public exhibitions held in January 2011 at Glenfarg, Gateside and Abernethy, a series of publicity materials, and an open day at the landfill in May 2011.

Landfill still has an important part to play in managing waste as recycling rates increase and alternative sustainable facilities are introduced in Scotland.

Amending the end date of Binn Farm landfill site will assist in the permitted space being filled as planned, enabling SITA UK to continue to take non-recyclable waste from the residents and businesses of Tayside.

However, it is important to point out that predictions on how long it will take to fill the void have been based on the current input rates at the landfill site. If recycling and recovery rates continue to increase, the space at the landfill may last beyond 2018, but SITA UK would have to make a further planning application to enable the site to continue beyond this date.

Gasification facility

Permission has been granted by Perth and Kinross Council for SITA UK to develop a gasification facility at Binn Farm.

The plans for a 60,000 tonne per annum gasification facility that will treat municipal waste and small amounts of business waste were granted permission in October 2011. The facility will generate enough electricity to heat and light the equivalent of almost 8,000 homes.

The planning application for the facility was submitted in October 2010 following a series of public consultation events with local residents and regular liaison with local community councils.

Copies of the exhibition panels and a newsletter distributed to local residents as part of the consultation can be found below, both containing detailed information on the proposals and contact details for more information.
