Information on SITA UK proposals for the Binn Farm gasification facility

Amendment to landfill closure date

SITA UK has submitted an application to Perth and Kinross Council to amend the end date of its current landfill operations at Binn Farm, near Glenfarg in Perthshire, from June 2014 to June 2018. It is likely the application will be considered by the Council’s planning committee in February 2012.

If the application is approved, this would allow the site to continue to accept waste at the current rate but over a longer time period, ensuring that the void is filled and then the land restored to the agreed contours. The total amount of waste deposited at the site will stay unchanged and follow the permitted scheme.

The planning application, which was submitted on 31 March 2011, followed a series of public consultation events held during the PAN (proposal of application) notice period, including public exhibitions held in Glenfarg, Gateside and Abernethy in January 2011.

Feedback was gratefully received and action has already been taken on a number of issues raised, including ensuring vehicles that visit the site avoid routes that take them through local villages wherever possible. All drivers are being issued with a flyer clearly showing the approved route from the site to the motorway, both north and southbound, via the A912 north of the site entrance and junction 9 of the M90.

Gasification facility

Permission has been granted by Perth and Kinross Council for SITA UK to develop a gasification facility at Binn Farm.

The plans for a 60,000 tonne per annum gasification facility that will treat municipal waste and small amounts of business waste were granted permission in October 2011. The facility will generate enough electricity to heat and light the equivalent of almost 8,000 homes.

The planning application for the facility was submitted in October 2010 following a series of public consultation events with local residents and regular liaison with local community councils.

Copies of the exhibition panels and a newsletter distributed to local residents as part of the consultation can be found below, both containing detailed information on the proposals and contact details for more information.
