Campground Waste Transfer Station
SITA UK has received planningpermission from Sunderland City Council to modernise the existing waste transfer station at Campground in Wrekenton.
Our plan is to demolish the old buildings on the site, some of which have not been used for 20 years and replace them with a new purpose-built facility.
This new enclosed and modern facility will mean that lorries will be able to transfer waste inside the new building, rather than under the rubber sheeting which houses the operation at the moment. This means we can control noise and odours much more effectively.
The new building will be 10 metres lower than the existing buildings that we plan to demolish.
We also plan to develop a new visitor and education centre on the site so we can show visitors and school pupils how a modern waste transfer station works and encourage people to manage their own waste in a more environmentally friendly way.
Public exhibition
SITA UK held a drop-in session on Wednesday 25 May 2011 to outline its plans for the proposed modernised facility. The drop-in session was held at Wrekenton Community Methodist Church, Springwell Avenue, Wrekenton.
