Charlton Lane
SITA Surrey is working on behalf of Surrey County Council to develop an Eco Park at Charlton Lane, Shepperton.
At a meeting of the Surrey County Council Planning and Regulatory Committee on 30 June 2011, the committee decided to grant planning permission for the development of an Eco Park at Charlton Lane. This is subject to it being referred to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
The aim of the proposed Eco Park at Charlton Lane is to divert as much waste as possible from landfill and produce renewable energy from the waste that cannot be recycled. It would be the first of its kind in the UK and include gasification and anaerobic digestion facilities alongside the existing community recycling centre, in order to further reduce the environmental impact of our operations.
The Charlton Lane site has been chosen for the Eco Park because it provides an opportunity to improve an existing waste facility, which is located to serve a significant proportion of Surrey’s population. Two planning applications for the development have been submitted.
These proposals seek to redevelop the site to deliver a range of new facilities:
- A new gasification facility using batch oxidation system technology to process 60,000 tonnes of household waste every year.
- An anaerobic digestion facility to process 40,000 tonnes of food waste a year.
- Further improvements to the existing community recycling centre including a new re-use centre.
- A bulking bay for consolidating or ‘bulking’ materials in one location into single batches of recyclates (such as metals, plastics or wood). This significantly reduces the number of vehicles leaving the site, further reducing traffic movements.
- An education centre to inspire and motivate children and adults to change the way they think about waste.
