Grove Nursery

Grove Nursery household waste recycling centre

SITA UK has submitted a planning application to Aberdeen City Council to develop a household waste recycling centre at the former Grove Nursery site on Hazlehead Avenue in Aberdeen.

The Council is now undertaking a period of statutory consultation and inviting comments on these plans. A copy of the planning application, along with details of assessments that have been undertaken on traffic, noise and ecology can be viewed at the Council’s planning office at: Aberdeen City Council, Business Hub 4, Marischal College, Broad Street, Aberdeen  AB10 1AB - Telephone: 01224 523470 - Fax: 01224 636181.

Alternatively, copies may be viewed online at http://planning.aberdeencity.gov.uk/docs/planningdocuments.asp?appnumber=111281

There are currently four household waste recycling centres in Aberdeen; three to the north of the city at Perwinnes Moss, Pitmedden Road and Sclattie, and one to the south at East Tullos. With no sites between the River Dee and the Haudagain roundabout, it is widely recognised there is a long-standing need to provide suitable facilities for residents in this part of the city and to ease waiting times at existing sites.

The Grove Nursery site was identified as the preferred location for a new household waste recycling centre by Aberdeen City Council’s Housing and Environment Committee in April 2010.

SITA UK operates 120 similar facilities throughout the country on behalf of UK local authorities. Household waste recycling centres provide householders with the opportunity to recycle an extensive range of materials. Once established, such facilities quickly become a welcome addition to local communities and make a significant contribution to recycling and landfill diversion.

The proposed site at Grove Nursery will help residents of Aberdeen City to make a significant contribution to more sustainable waste and resource management in Scotland. Helping residents to recycle more materials close to home is one of the best ways Aberdeen City Council can meet the Scottish Government’s ambitious targets to increase recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill as well as limit the economic impact of year on year increases in the cost of landfill tax.

Public exhibition

SITA UK held a public exhibition to outline its plans for the proposed facility at the Hazlehead Community Centre on Provost Graham Avenue, Aberdeen on Wednesday 25 May 2011 between 6pm and 10pm and again on Thursday 26 May 2011 between 10am and 2pm. The event was well attended and we would like to thank those who took the trouble to come along and express their views.

If you were unable to attend, then the information on display at the exhibitions is now available for download below.
