Hendon
Hendon waste transfer station
Planning consent has been given by Sunderland City Council for the development of a waste transfer station on industrial land at Sunderland City Council’s Jack Crawford House site on Commercial Road in Hendon.
The facility will allow Sunderland’s waste to be delivered to a central point for sorting and ‘bulking up’ before being taken to an energy-from-waste facility in Teesside where it will be used as fuel to create electricity. The facility is integral to the South Tyne and Wear Waste Management Partnership’s plans to develop more sustainable ways of managing rubbish - by diverting it away from landfill and converting it into a useful resource.
This new facility will be fully enclosed, meaning that lorries will be able to transfer waste indoors in controlled conditions, to reduce the likelihood of potential noise and odours.
The facility will also sort around 2,000 tonnes of recyclable materials each year including wood, plastic, metals, waste electrical products (such as TVs), tyres and glass bottles. These materials will be transferred on to recycling companies.
The transfer station will help reduce the amount of road journeys for vehicles taking waste to Teesside, cutting exhaust emissions and saving on fuel.
Public drop-in session
SITA UK consulted widely on its proposals and a public drop-in session was held at Raich Carter Sports Centre on Tuesday 28 June 2011 to provide local residents with an opportunity to view SITA UK’s plans for the proposed facility.
Further information
An information leaflet was produced and distributed to over 3,500 households to advertise the public drop-in session. This leaflet is available for download here, together with a copy of the panels on display at the exhibition.
