Knowsley
SITA UK received planning permission in December 2011 to develop a rail loading waste transfer station at Knowsley Industrial Park in Kirkby, Liverpool.
The facility would be located on a site in Woodward Road, which is currently occupied by the Potter Group.
The new facility could take in up to 500,000 tonnes of residual (non-recycled) household waste. This would be delivered to the enclosed facility on lorries and would then be bulked up and transported in sealed containers on a train to Teesside in North East England. In Teesside, the waste would be burned in an energy-from-waste facility to produce electricity.
SITA UK will only develop the new facility at the industrial park if we are successful in securing a 30-year contract with the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority to manage residual (non-recycled) waste produced by householders.
More information about SITA UK’s application is available in the newsletter below, which was sent to approximately 12,000 local residents and businesses in June and July 2011. SITA UK has also met with local groups and organisations such as Acorn Farm as part of its pre-application consultation programme.
SITA UK has proposed a community fund, which would be worth up to £50,000 per year throughout the life of the contract. This money would be available for local community projects.
Members of the public were also invited to attend two public drop-in sessions, on 13 and 14 July 2011 in Kirkby, to discuss our planning application. Exhibition boards from the drop-in sessions are available to download below.
