SITA UK's plans to submit a planning application for an anaerobic digestion facility at Packington

Packington anaerobic digestion facility

SITA UK will be submitting a planning application to Warwickshire County Council for the development of an anaerobic digestion facility which would treat 50,000 tonnes of organic waste - such as food and green garden waste - at its Packington landfill site. The plans also include the development of polytunnels, which could use both heat and the compost produced at the facility.

About the proposed facility

  • The anaerobic digestion facility would recover value from waste in the form of renewable electricity and heat.
  • The facility would be self-sufficient in terms of energy needs, with both electricity and heat being reused in the process.
  • Surplus renewable electricity would be supplied to the National Grid.
  • Heat would be reused within the digestion process and could be used in neighbouring operations, such as the landfill leachate treatment facility and proposed polytunnels.
  • The facility would also produce a compost and liquid digestate which could be used as an alternative fertiliser and peat replacement compost.

All operations associated with our proposals – including waste delivery, storage, processing and composting – would be carried out in enclosed buildings.

The plans also include a proposal to have the polytunnels operated by local growers for crops or flowers that will utilise the compost, liquid fertiliser and heat produced by the anaerobic digestion facility. An area of the polytunnels would be dedicated for use by local schools and community organisations for horticultural use.
